CEREC - Same Day Dental Crowns

A whole new breed of dentistry for the busy people of Bristol

How great would it be to be able to have your dentistry in a single appointment?

Many people find that having dental crowns and permanent white fillings is not the most productive way of spending their time - often having to return for repeat appointments means you get less done of things you need or wish to do!

Save time at the dentist

With CEREC we use modern technology to allow your new tooth to literally be 'born in front of your eyes' and save time at the dentist.

CEREC Same Day Crowns use 3 steps to help save you time:

  1. We digitally scan your tooth which needs the filling or crown (this replaces the impression goo)
  2. The computer then designs your new tooth on screen (this replaces the dental technician and saves time)
  3. Our milling machine gently cuts your new tooth from a solid block of industrial grade ceramic (this is the part where your new crown is born in front of your eyes)

What is a Dental Crown or 'Cap'?

A crown is a dental restoration that is used to protect damaged, cracked or broken down teeth. It fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth preserving functionality. A crown can also be known as a ‘cap’.

Traditionally these crowns would be made in a dental laboratory, this means posting 'gooey' impressions to the lab, then waiting 2 weeks for the finished crown to be returned.

With CEREC we use our 'digital technician' to make the crowns right here in our Bristol based dental practice.

Why has a crown for my teeth been prescribed?

A crown is advised if an old crown needs to be replaced or the tooth would benefit for the strength that a crown can provide when a filling would not be suitable. Cosmetic Dentistry often requires the use of many techniques to restore a broken down smile and crowns are one of the options.

What is a CEREC crown made of?

Same day dental crownMost dental crowns are made from a special ceramic similar in strength to granite and similar to natural tooth in aesthetic qualities.

This ceramic is made in a factory in a block, the CEREC machine in our Bristol based dental practice then cuts your new tooth from this block using a milling machine accurate to 5 microns - that's 5/1000ths of a centimeter!

How long does a CEREC crown take to make?

The initial preparation of the tooth will take around 1 hour, the design and milling will take another hour and the final fitting one final hour. When both yourself and the dentist are happy with the fit and appearance of the new dental crown it will be fixed in place with special dental glue.

Does it hurt to have a tooth prepared for a crown?

No. Appropriate local anaesthetic is used (if applicable) so the preparation should feel no different from a filling. If you are particularly nervous or anxious of the dentist then we have a dental sedation service that will help you to relax your way through treatment.

And the great thing about CEREC is that you will only need one injection at one appointment.

How long will the crown last?

How long your crown lasts depends on how well you look after it. Properly cared for crowns should last for many years. Crowns themselves cannot decay, but decay can start where the edge of the crown joins the tooth. It is therefore important to keep this area clean.
