What does wrinkle smoothing do?

Wrinkle smoothing uses a prescription only botulinum toxin type A injectable. It is used in tiny amounts in facial aesthetic procedures to reduce the activity of specific facial muscles. In effect, this means that the treated muscles are stopped from moving to allow the overlying skin to relax and smooth out over time – providing a wrinkle smoothing affect.

This wrinkle smoothing treatment can be used in a range of areas, including:

  • forehead frown
  • crows feet
  • laughter lines
  • under eye creases
  • nose bunny lines
  • gummy smile treatment
  • lip flip
  • lipstick lines (aka smokers lines)
  • chin
  • downturned lips
  • nefertiti neck lift (neck definition when smiling)
  • jaw slimming
  • clenching jaw treatment
  • excessive underarm sweating

How many wrinkle smoothing appointments will I need?

Though it may vary depending on the extent of your desired results, this treatment can typically be completed in one appointment.

How long does a wrinkle smoothing appointment last?

Treatment appointments typically last 20 minutes.

What does the treatment involve?

Wrinkle smoothing treatments involve a series of gently administered injections to the areas that were pre-determined during your initial consultation and desired outcomes.

Does treatment hurt?

As pain perception varies from individual to individual, the level of discomfort that you feel will largely depend on your history with pain. The treatment involves a tiny needle to pierce the outer layer of skin and, though some discomfort may result, pain is typically minimal, and the actual injection of the product itself is not painful. If you have experienced eyebrow waxing or micro-blading, you are likely to find this treatment very tolerable.

Will the dentist use numbing cream?

The use of numbing cream on the treatment area is typically not necessary.

How long until results can be seen from treatment?

The results of this treatment are gradual and, though they may vary, patients are usually able to discern noticeable effects after 7 to 10 days with full effects becoming more apparent in two to three weeks following treatment. Peak effect is around 6 weeks after your treatment.

How long will wrinkle smoothing treatment results last?Azzalure before and after

The longevity of your results is entirely dependent on the extent of the problem and your treatment history, as the more often a patient receives wrinkle smoothing treatment, the longer results may last. As is typical of any muscle that is not used it becomes weaker, so it will take longer to get back to full strength the more often you have treatment.

Typically, results can last anywhere between 2 and 4 months. As botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring, biodegradable substance, its effects are not permanent and will always wear off as the body breaks down and processes the organic substance.

Are there any side-effects associated with treatments?

Side effects are typically limited to the redness and swelling that results from piercing the skin at the injection sites. This usually diminished within 10 to 15 minutes.

Some patients may also experience bruising at the injection site ranging from a pinprick to a more substantial bruise. Again, the extent of the bruising is entirely patient-dependent and will last as long as bruises normally last for that specific individual.

Very rarely, a patient may experience slight eyelid or forehead drooping or even more rarely, blurred vision in reaction to the injection that can last as long as the substance itself remains active. However, the chances of experiencing these adverse effects are very low and can be reduced for the most part by working with an experienced dentist like Carol and Yasmin at Evolve Dentistry.

Is there any downtime associated with treatment?

Though patients may experience slight swelling and bruising, that is the extent of the typical side effects involved with wrinkle smoothing treatments, and patients can return to work immediately after their appointment if they desire.

What pre-op advice is recommended for wrinkle smoothing treatments?

We advise that any individual receiving wrinkle smoothing treatment at our practice abstains from drinking alcohol the night before the treatment as having alcohol in the system can increase your risk of bruising.

Portishead wrinkle relaxation

What post-op advice is recommended?

Post-operation, it is best to refrain from lying down for 2 to 3 hours post-procedure and abstain from applying makeup or moisturiser to the treated areas for the remainder of the day.

In addition, it is important that patients do not engage in any exercise or alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours, as this can reduce the benefit of your treatment.

Finally, avoid saunas, steam rooms, facials or sunbeds for at least 2 weeks post-procedure and keep the treated area out of the sun as much as possible for that period. Always wear a high factor sunscreen everyday.

Do I need a routine review?

For patients who are content with their results, a follow-up appointment is unnecessary unless further treatment is a part of your treatment plan.

At Evolve Dentistry, we ask that patients wait a minimum of 2 weeks before the full benefit of treatment can be assessed. This allows the treatment time to become active and take full effect. However, if you experience swelling, pain, redness, visual disturbance or any unexpected reaction, please contact us as soon as possible.

If the 2-week period has come to an end, and you are still concerned with the results, we request that you wait no longer than 4 weeks out from your initial procedure to contact our practice. We do not carry out any adjustments of the treatment more than 4 weeks after the initial treatment as this can lead to resistance to the product’s effectiveness in the future.

Are there any absolute contraindications for potential patients?:

Pregnancy

  • Breastfeeding
  • Active skin infections in the areas that require treatment
  • Taking Roaccutane (prescribed acne treatment)
  • Neuro-muscular conditions such as MS, motor neuron disease, or muscular dystrophy

The team will help you determine if you are suitable for treatment at your initial consultation

Top 10 FAQs – Wrinkle Smoothing in Portishead

1. What is wrinkle smoothing and how does it work?

Wrinkle smoothing involves the use of a purified protein (typically botulinum toxin) that temporarily relaxes facial muscles, reducing the appearance of fine lines and dynamic wrinkles. It’s a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment commonly used for areas such as the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet.

2. Is wrinkle smoothing treatment safe?

Yes, when administered by a qualified professional, wrinkle smoothing is a safe and well-established procedure. It has been extensively used in both medical and aesthetic settings for decades, with a strong safety record. Possible side effects are usually mild and temporary.

3. Who can perform wrinkle smoothing treatments in Portishead?

In the UK, wrinkle smoothing treatments must be carried out by a trained healthcare professional, such as a dentist, doctor, or nurse who is registered with a relevant governing body. Many dental practices in Portishead now offer these treatments as part of their facial aesthetics services.

4. How long do the results last?

Results typically last between 3 to 4 months, depending on factors such as your metabolism, lifestyle, and the area treated. Over time, with consistent treatment, some patients notice longer-lasting effects.

5. Is the procedure painful?

Most patients describe only minimal discomfort during the procedure. The use of a very fine needle and experienced technique helps ensure a comfortable experience. Some practitioners also offer numbing cream for added reassurance.

6. What areas can be treated?

The most commonly treated areas include forehead lines, frown lines (between the eyebrows), and crow’s feet (around the eyes). Other advanced areas can include bunny lines, chin dimpling, and jawline slimming, depending on your provider’s expertise.

7. Will I look ‘frozen’ or unnatural?

Not when treated by a skilled practitioner. The goal of wrinkle smoothing is to achieve a natural, refreshed look – not a frozen appearance. A personalised consultation ensures your treatment is tailored to your facial expressions and preferences.

8. How long does the procedure take?

The treatment typically takes around 15 to 30 minutes, making it an ideal option for those with busy schedules. There is no significant downtime, and most people return to normal activities straight away.

9. Are there any side effects or risks?

Side effects are generally minor and temporary, including slight redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. Rare complications can occur but are greatly minimised when treated by an experienced professional.

10. How much does wrinkle smoothing cost in Portishead?

Prices vary depending on the practitioner and the number of areas treated. As a general guide, single areas start from around £250, with multi-area treatments costing up to £400–£500. Always ensure your provider is fully qualified and transparent about costs during consultation.

When is root canal treatment needed?

It’s a question many patients ask — and in this video, Richard explains it clearly and simply.

Root canal treatment is usually needed when the nerve inside a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. This can happen because of deep decay, a crack in the tooth, repeated dental work, or sometimes after an injury.

You might experience symptoms like persistent toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, pain when biting, or swelling around the gum. However, sometimes there are very few symptoms at all — which is why regular check-ups at the practice are so important.

The good news is that root canal treatment is designed to relieve pain, not cause it. It removes the infection, saves the natural tooth, and helps you avoid extraction.

Watch Richard’s video to understand the signs to look out for — and if you’re worried about a tooth, get in touch with our reception team for advice.

Love a sweet treat? Jane shares a simple swap that your teeth will thank you for.

Sticky sweets cling to your teeth and sit in the tiny grooves for longer, feeding the bacteria that cause decay. The longer they stick around, the more damage they can do.

Instead, try swapping them for crunchy veg or a handful of nuts. Foods like carrots, cucumber and peppers have a natural crunch that helps stimulate saliva, which protects your teeth. Nuts are also a lower-sugar option and far less likely to cling to enamel.

Small changes really do make a big difference over time.
Are electric toothbrushes better than manual?

It’s a question we’re asked a lot at the practice – and in this video, Carol gives a clear, honest answer.

Electric toothbrushes can make it easier to clean effectively, especially if you struggle with technique, brushing for long enough, or reaching certain areas. Many people find they remove plaque more consistently, simply because they do most of the work for you.

That said, a manual toothbrush can still do a great job when used properly. It’s less about the brush itself and more about how you use it.

Watch Carol’s quick explanation to find out what we usually recommend – and how to make sure you’re getting the most from your brushing routine.

If you’re unsure whether your brushing technique is working for you, mention it at your next appointment and we’ll be happy to guide you. 🪥
