Why are my gums sore

What causes your gums to be sore?

Various things can cause your gums to become sore, such as brushing too hard, poor flossing techniques, infection, or gum disease. Other causes unrelated to oral hygiene could include a Vitamin K deficiency, hormonal changes during pregnancy, leukemia or blood disorders.

How can I heal my gums?

There are a number of things that you can do to help heal your sore gums

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day.
  2. Use an electric toothbrush.
  3. Make sure your toothbrush has soft or extra-soft bristles.
  4. Replace your toothbrush every three months.
  5. Floss or use TePe brushes daily.
  6. See your hygienist regularly, either every 3 or 6 months.

How long should sore gums last?

The time it takes for sore gums to return to normal depends on the cause. For most cases, such as poor flossing technique – the gums should take around 10 days to heal. However, your gums can start to feel better within a few days.

Why do my gums hurt in one spot?

Gums may hurt in one spot for a number of reasons, such as, eating hard or sharp foods, a gum abscess, or from an infection trapped within the gums. Food trapped between teeth can also put pressure on the gums which can cause pain in the gums if not removed with floss or TePes.

Why do my gums feel like they are throbbing?

The most common cause of sore or inflamed gums is gum disease, which can be caused by a build up of plaque or tartar, allowing bacteria to mature under the gum line causing problems. . Those suffering with gum disease often experience gum pain, throbbing teeth, wobbly teeth, bleeding gums and increased tooth sensitivity.

When should I see my dentist?

You should see your dentists if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Red, swollen gums
  • Gums that pull back from your teeth
  • Dentures that don’t fit correctly anymore
  • Pain when you chew
  • Loose teeth
  • Teeth that are sensitive to hot or cold
