Dermal Fillers at Evolve Dentistry, Portishead

What do dermal fillers do?

Dermal filler injections are used to restore lost volume to the skin, resulting in a plumper, more youthful appearance, fillers can also be used to improve the shape of your lips and cheeks. At Evolve Dentistry, we have chosen to use dermal fillers that are hyaluronic acid which are the safest to use, such as Restylane and Teoxane.

Dermal fillers can be used to enhance the lips, cheeks, and chin, as well as reduce the appearance of the lines that run from the nose to the mouth – nasolabial folds – and those that extend from the corners of the mouth – Marionette lines. In addition, dermal fillers can be used to smooth out and reduce the appearance of smoker’s lines around the lips.

How many dermal filler treatments will I need?

The number of treatments will depend on your desired results and the extent of the issues that are being treated. However, the majority of patients can expect to have their dermal filler treatment completed in one appointment.

Before and after lip fillers

How long does treatment last?

Dermal filler appointments at Evolve Dentistry typically take 30 – 60 minutes.

How long does a consultation last?

For dermal filler treatment, we require that our patients attend a no-obligation consultation to discuss the results that they are looking to achieve through treatment and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

What does the treatment involve?

During your treatment appointment, we will deliver the appropriate amount of dermal filler product to the agreed areas using either a cannula or a small needle to achieve your desired results.

Does dermal filler treatment hurt?

The advantage of a dentist carrying out this treatment is that Carol can gently give you a dental block to ensure that your treatment is pain-free, this is generally done for lip enhancements.

Will the dentist use numbing cream?

Yes, Carol will use numbing cream – which is to be applied 30 – 40 minutes before treatment – to numb the treatment area and make you more comfortable throughout the procedure. This is more commonly used for cheek fillers.

For those who are seeking lip enhancement through dermal filler treatment, we utilise a dental block product to numb the area, as the lips are particularly sensitive.

Lip filler before and after

How long until results can be seen from dermal filler treatment?

Results of your dermal filler treatment will be immediately apparent following the procedure. However, the visible results are typically only 80% of the actual final results, with the further 20% improvement becoming apparent in the 2 weeks that follow post-procedure.

This partially delayed result is due to the hyaluronic acid’s incredible ability to attract and retain moisture within the skin, it can attract 1000 times it’s own volume. As the substance is absorbed into the skin, the hyaluronic acid helps to further moisturise and plump the overlying skin, hydrating and smoothing it over time.

How long will dermal filler treatment results last?

Depending on which filler product is utilised and the area treated, dermal filler treatment results can last between 6 and 12 months.

Are there any side effects associated with dermal filler treatment?

Some of the typical side effects associated with dermal filler treatments are slight bruising and swelling in the treatment area following the procedure, which will wear off over time as the area heals. The appearance and discomfort of bruising and swelling can be mitigated by icing the area and taking pain relief, you will be advised on what to do after your treatment.

Treatment sites may also be tender for up to 1-week post-procedure, and some patients may develop small nodules under the skin at the injection site. If necessary, these can be dissolved but this is not required very often.

Very rarely, an emergency condition can develop if the filler is injected directly into a blood vessel rather than the skin. This requires immediate medical attention, as the filler must be dissolved with an Hyalase injection as quickly possible. Carol is fully trained and capable of administering the appropriate response required to handle this emergency. This is very rare and occurs at the time of treatment so can be dealt with immediately.

Is there any downtime associated with dermal filler treatment?

Though patients may experience slight swelling and bruising, there is usually no downtime associated with dermal filler treatment, and you may return to work immediately.

What pre-op advice is recommended?

At Evolve Dentistry, we advise that our patients refrain from consuming alcohol for 24 hours before their treatment appointment, as alcohol consumption may increase your chances of developing bruising.

It is essential that dermal filler patients refrain from taking aspirin, vitamins C and E, for 48 hours pre-treatment appointment.

What post-op advice is recommended?

There are multiple actions that you can take post procedure to reduce the chances of developing more extensive bruising and swelling and to ensure that the treated area heals properly, including:

  • Refrain from lying down for 2 – 3 hours post-procedure.
  • Do not apply make-up or moisturiser to the treated area for the rest of the day.
  • Refrain from exercising and consuming alcohol for 24 hours post-procedure.
  • Try to avoid making any extreme facial expressions.
  • It is best to sleep on your back to prevent the filler from being moved for at least 3 nights following your procedure.
  • To reduce swelling, apply Arnica gel and ice to any swollen areas.
  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms, sunbeds, and facials for 2 weeks post-procedure.
  • Keep treatment sites out of direct sunlight for 24 hours.
  • Always wear a high SPF suncream every day.

Do I need a routine review?

We do require a routine review for our dermal filler patients. This typically takes place 2 weeks following the procedure and lasts for 10 minutes. At this appointment we check that you are happy with your treatment. We also take photos to assess the difference that your treatment has achieved.

Are there any absolute contraindications associated with dermal filler treatments?

  • Pregnancy
  • Breast feeding
  • Active skin infections, such as cold sores
  • Individuals who are taking Roaccutane and anticoagulants

What are the key benefits of dermal filler treatments?

Dermal fillers can provide a more youthful appearance by plumping and smoothing the skin to improve its visible texture.

Finally, because the injections consist of natural and biodegradable materials, they are not permanent, and the body will eventually break them down, necessitating further treatment. However, the hydrating effects of hyaluronic acid offers restorative benefits that will continually improve the look and texture of skin over time with further treatment.

How much do dermal filler treatments cost?

The cost of your dermal filler treatment at Evolve Dentistry will depend entirely on the extent of the treatment that is necessary.

Please see our fee guide for up to date prices.

Top 10 Dermal Filler FAQs – Portishead

  1. What are dermal fillers and how do they work?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels typically made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body. They work by adding volume, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, and enhancing facial contours. Results are immediate and can create a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

  2. Are dermal fillers safe?

When administered by a qualified and experienced professional, dermal fillers are considered safe. All reputable products used in the UK are thoroughly tested and CE-marked for quality and safety. Most patients experience only mild discomfort. A topical anaesthetic or fillers containing lidocaine are often used to minimise any pain. The procedure is quick, and any sensitivity usually subsides shortly after.

  5. What areas can be treated with dermal fillers?

Common treatment areas include the lips, cheeks, jawline, nasolabial folds (smile lines), marionette lines, chin, and under-eye hollows (tear troughs). Fillers can also be used for non-surgical rhinoplasty and hand rejuvenation.

Downtime is minimal. You may experience mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site, which usually resolves within a few days. Most clients return to normal activities immediately after treatment.

Dermal fillers are suitable for adults over 18 who are in good general health and looking to enhance or restore facial volume, reduce lines, or improve symmetry. A thorough consultation is always carried out to ensure suitability.

When is root canal treatment needed?

It’s a question many patients ask — and in this video, Richard explains it clearly and simply.

Root canal treatment is usually needed when the nerve inside a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. This can happen because of deep decay, a crack in the tooth, repeated dental work, or sometimes after an injury.

You might experience symptoms like persistent toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, pain when biting, or swelling around the gum. However, sometimes there are very few symptoms at all — which is why regular check-ups at the practice are so important.

The good news is that root canal treatment is designed to relieve pain, not cause it. It removes the infection, saves the natural tooth, and helps you avoid extraction.

Watch Richard’s video to understand the signs to look out for — and if you’re worried about a tooth, get in touch with our reception team for advice.
Smile Hack 🍎🥕

Love a sweet treat? Jane shares a simple swap that your teeth will thank you for.

Sticky sweets cling to your teeth and sit in the tiny grooves for longer, feeding the bacteria that cause decay. The longer they stick around, the more damage they can do.

Instead, try swapping them for crunchy veg or a handful of nuts. Foods like carrots, cucumber and peppers have a natural crunch that helps stimulate saliva, which protects your teeth. Nuts are also a lower-sugar option and far less likely to cling to enamel.

Small changes really do make a big difference over time.
Are electric toothbrushes better than manual?

It’s a question we’re asked a lot at the practice – and in this video, Carol gives a clear, honest answer.

Electric toothbrushes can make it easier to clean effectively, especially if you struggle with technique, brushing for long enough, or reaching certain areas. Many people find they remove plaque more consistently, simply because they do most of the work for you.

That said, a manual toothbrush can still do a great job when used properly. It’s less about the brush itself and more about how you use it.

Watch Carol’s quick explanation to find out what we usually recommend – and how to make sure you’re getting the most from your brushing routine.

If you’re unsure whether your brushing technique is working for you, mention it at your next appointment and we’ll be happy to guide you. 🪥

😴 Can snoring affect your oral health?

In our latest Two Thirty video, Maggie answers a question many people don’t think to ask — can snoring impact your teeth and gums?

The short answer is yes, it can.

Snoring is often linked to breathing through your mouth at night, which can cause a dry mouth. Saliva plays an important role in protecting your teeth, so when your mouth is dry, you may be more prone to tooth decay and bad breath.

If you snore and have noticed dryness, increased decay or concerns about your breath, it’s worth mentioning at your next appointment.

Our reception team at Evolve Dentistry in Portishead will be happy to arrange a consultation if you’d like advice.
⏰ Smile hack: When you brush matters

Did you know it’s not just how long you brush — but when you brush — that makes a difference? Maggie shares an important smile hack about timing your toothbrushing properly.

Brushing straight after eating — especially after acidic foods or drinks like fruit, juice or coffee — can actually do more harm than good. Your enamel is slightly softened, and brushing immediately can cause wear.

Maggie explains the best time to brush and why waiting can help protect your teeth long term.

It’s a small change that can make a big difference to your oral health.
How do braces actually work? 🤔

In the latest video from our Two Thirty series, Lisa explains exactly how braces move teeth — and why treatment takes time.

If you’ve ever wondered how gentle pressure can gradually straighten your smile, or what’s happening behind the scenes during orthodontic treatment, this short video breaks it down in a clear and easy-to-understand way.

Whether you’re considering braces for yourself or your child, understanding the process can make the journey feel much more reassuring.

Watch the full video now and, if you have questions about braces, our reception team will be happy to help you book a consultation at Evolve Dentistry in Portishead.
