Nervous patients, how we help

Our team is very experienced in helping nervous patients. We often find that just discussing the issues can hugely help our patients reduce their dental anxiety. We will take our time to reassure you at every stage of your appointment and ensure that you understand what is going on and what to expect. If necessary, sedation is a wonderful way of enabling treatment for those people who may otherwise avoid it. We also offer hypno-relaxation for those who want to try a more natural approach. Our focus is to support you in achieving the outcome that you want.

FAQs

What do dental radiographs show you?

We take dental radiographs (x-rays) to show us what we can’t see in the mouth. We are mainly looking for decay, bone loss or infection, but they are also taken prior to braces being worn to check the length of the roots or the position of any un-erupted teeth or wisdom teeth.

Why do I need photos of my teeth taken?

You don’t need to have photos taken but taking photos during a full assessment can be very useful  as they can capture details that might not be visible on the day of the clinical assessment and keep a record of your progress through treatment. They are also very useful when communicating with other clinicians.

Why do I need RCT?

RCT stands for root canal treatment. This is recommended when the nerve of the tooth has died off and become infected with a dental abscess. When this occurs, the only options are to have RCT or an extraction, if you want to keep your teeth, then you would need root canal treatment.

Is a root filling dangerous?

A root filling is not dangerous. A lot of people are worried about root canal treatment due to what they have read or heard. It is important that all the infection is removed when having a root filling carried out so the experience and skill of the person doing the treatment is very important. You can choose to see a specialist for this treatment, a dentist who specialises in root canal treatment is called an endodontist.

What do I do if I’m in pain after treatment?

If it is anticipated that  you may have pain after treatment, such as an extraction, your dentist should give you advice on what painkillers you can take. It is important not to take more than the stated dose on the packet. If your pain is unexpected or uncontrollable, you should contact your dental practice.

Do you place implants?

We do not offer implants at Evolve but refer to some excellent colleagues either in Weston super Mare or Bristol. We do offer other tooth replacement options.

What happens if a treatment fails?

It is very likely that over the course of your lifespan that your dental treatment will fail. There is no material or treatment that is guaranteed to last a lifetime. However, if your treatment fails within the guarantee period offered by your practice, then contact your dental practice and ask to be reviewed.

Why are my teeth sensitive?

Teeth become sensitive when the dentine or nerve of the tooth is exposed. Normally, teeth are covered with enamel which protects the teeth from damage. If the enamel is lost through decay or wear, then the exposed dentine will be sensitive. Do not ignore sensitive teeth, see your dentist to find out why your teeth are sensitive and follow any advice given.

Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?

You are always welcome to bring someone with you to your appointment if you need the support. Generally though, bringing younger children that require your attention is not a good idea as it can be very distracting for everyone.

Am I allowed to eat and drink after the treatment?

You are usually able to eat and drink after treatment but if you are numb, you should be careful not to bite or burn yourself. If you have had a tooth extracted, then you may be advised to avoid eating on that side of your mouth for 2-3 days.

Can I glue my tooth back in with superglue?

Please do not glue your tooth back. Generally this question refers to crowns or denture teeth and whilst it is tempting to reglue your tooth, the glue can make it difficult to properly recement or fix your tooth as it affects the materials that we use.
