Here at Evolve Dentistry in Portishead we recently ran a competition to win a smile transformation as part of our 8th birthday celebrations. There were prizes for the first and second place and here, we caught up with Charlotte who won the first prize of up to £7,000 of cosmetic dentistry to find out why she entered and what winning means to her…

‘I suppose it’s as I have gotten older that I have become more conscious of the way that my teeth look.I have gradually taught myself to avoid smiling where possible, if in doubt I just keep my mouth closed. The problem with this is that everyone just assumes I’m permanently miserable!

I’ve always said that if I won the lottery, fixing my teeth would be the first thing I’d do, so when I saw the advert for the competition at Evolve, I figured I had nothing to lose.I submitted my application and guessed that a zillion other people had done the same, so tried not to think too much about it as I didn’t want to torment myself. I was really pleased – and very surprised – to receive a call telling me I’d been shortlisted.

I came in and initially had a chat with the team about my concerns and what I hoped to achieve. I’ll be honest, I knew I wanted to correct my teeth but I hadn’t realised how badly I wanted it until we talked how it made me feel. I discovered that I was more concerned about what people thought of my teeth, rather than what they thought about me or my capabilities.

I went through for the clinical assessment with Jonathan and was greeted by Megan who treated me like a friend. Jonathan took loads of pictures and X-rays and then explained to me – in amazing detail – the treatment that he was considering and what he expected the outcome to be.

I went home and cried.I felt like it was all within touching distance, but I convinced myself that the other people who had entered would undoubtedly deserve it more than me. In my head I had no chance and it was game over.

When Julie phoned and told me I had won I spent the rest of the day grinning like an insane Cheshire cat, so much so that it actually made my face hurt. I’ve never been able to say this before, but I couldn’t wait to go back to the dentist. I arranged to see Jonathan on the Monday, just to re-confirm the treatment plan he had previously recommended, and by the Tuesday afternoon I had upper and lower fixed braces!

Now my braces are on and I’m on the road to new teeth, I’m so excited! I keep trying to imagine what my teeth will look like when my braces come off and can’t quite picture it yet, but I know it’s going to be awesome!

The team at Evolve Dentistry have been simply amazing; I have been astounded by the level of service that they provide. Nothing is too much trouble and they have always immediately answered any questions that I have had.

There’s something about Evolve that I’m struggling to describe, but you can’t help but feel like you’re in great hands from the moment you walk through the door. They’ve got a very good thing going on!’
