How common is dental phobia?
Fear of the dentist is incredibly common, with surveys estimating that it can affect 13%-24% around the world. For most, whilst difficult, it’s not disabling. However, some people are so fearful of visiting the dentist that they don’t visit at all.
What causes dental phobia?
The majority of people don’t know where their fear of the dentist comes from, it could be because their parents were nervous, or they have been told stories from friends as a child. Perhaps they had an experience at the dentist that has made them fearful.
How can I get over my fear of the dentist?
At Evolve, we see a lot of patients that are nervous about visiting the dentist. It’s important to us that we give patients the time to discuss their concerns with us so that we can understand what we can do to help them feel as comfortable as possible when visiting us.
Some of our patients visit us on quieter days, or bring headphones with them so that they can listen to their favourite music or podcast. Julie, one of our Treatment Co-ordinators can spend time with you ahead of your appointment to help you with some breathing techniques.
If you have concerns about visiting the dentist, call Julie or Rachael our Treatment Co-ordinators, on 01275 842550, to discuss how we can help you.
