How can food affect your teeth?

Which foods help strengthen tooth material?

Calcium rich foods, such as low-fat or fat-free milk, yogurt and cheese can help to promote strong teeth. Canned salmon, almonds and dark green leafy vegetables are also sources of calcium.

How can I make my teeth stronger?

  • Limit sugary foods
  • Eat foods that protect the enamel
  • Avoid over brushing
  • Avoid grinding your teeth

Which foods are worse?

  • Sugary sweets and foods
  • Soft drinks – whether they are sugar-free or not
  • Wine
  • Citrus fruits
  • Energy drinks

Can tooth enamel be restored?

Once tooth enamel is damaged, it isn’t possible to bring it back. However, weakened enamel can be improved to some extent by increasing it’s mineral content. Although toothpastes and mouthwashes can never rebuild teeth, they can contribute to the remineralisation process.

If you would like some tips on how to improve your oral health, you can book an appointment with our hygienist, even if you aren’t a patient at Evolve.

How do you know if you grind your teeth?

Teeth grinding often happens without you realising — especially at night. In this video, Maggie explains some of the common signs to look out for, including:
• Jaw pain or soreness
• Frequent headaches
• Worn or flattened teeth

She also explains how your dentist can check for signs of grinding and, if needed, provide a mouthguard to help protect your teeth.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you might be grinding your teeth, this quick video is a great place to start 👇

Can mouthwash replace brushing?

In this short video, Carol explains why brushing for two minutes, twice a day is essential for keeping your teeth and gums healthy — and why mouthwash should not be seen as a replacement.

She also talks about:
• When mouthwash may be appropriate
• Why mouthwash should only be used if directed by a dentist or hygienist

Simple habits, done properly, make the biggest difference.
