At Evolve, we offer private orthodontic treatment to our patients. We have a number of options available to our patients depending on their lifestyle, budget and case.
Can I get free orthodontic treatment?
NHS orthodontic treatment is free for people under the age of 18 with a clear health need for treatment. Eligibility for orthodontic treatment is based on an assessment called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need. But because of high demand, there is often a very long waiting list. It’s not often prescribed for adults, unless you are a very severe case or is required for health reasons. An alternative option would be private orthodontic treatment.
Are private braces better than NHS?
If you choose to have braces at a private practice, you will be able to start treatment as soon as you wish, rather then sit on a very long waiting list with the NHS. You may also have a wider choice of which brace system you have, for example, you may want clear aligners such as Invisalign, which isn’t available on the NHS.
Can private dentists refer to NHS orthodontics?
A private dentist will usually refer you to a private orthodontist, however, if you wish to register with an NHS dentist and you feel your case may meet the requirements of NHS treatment then this is possible.
Do many adults wear braces?
Most of the patients that we treat at Evolve are adults though we are also very happy to treat children. We tend to find that adults tend to want braces either because they have never worn braces and are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth, or they had braces as a teenager and their teeth have relapse.
Why do teeth relapse?
Once your teeth have moved into a better position, they must be held in that position to stop them from moving back again, your teeth will always try to keep moving. In order to do this, your teeth need to be held in their new position with retainers, these can be fixed and removable. Having both is the best option, retention is for life.
What is the average cost of braces?
Braces can vary on cost greatly, depending on a number of factors, including the complexity of your case, which brace system you wish to proceed with, how many visits you may need to the orthodontist. When comparing prices, it’s important to understand what is and isn’t included in the treatment plan. Here at Evolve, all of our brace packages include free whitening, free fixed and removable retainers, all necessary x-rays and scans, all appointments, a 20 minute cosmetic bonding consultation and follow up appointments for 12 months.
If you have any concerns about your teeth or gums, please call Evolve Dentistry in Portishead on 01275 842 550. We’d be happy to see you as a new patient, where we will carry out a full check of your oral health and discuss any concerns or issues that you may be experiencing.

Our Gromits have become quite the local celebrities here at Evolve 🐾💛
So many of you pop into our patient lounge just to see the collection, and we love how much joy they bring to patients of all ages.
At the moment, two of our Gromits seem to have wandered off on an adventure! We’re hoping they simply need a little help finding their way home.
If you happen to spot them locally or see anything that looks like part of our collection being sold, we’d really appreciate you letting us know. You can message us privately or call the practice.
They’re part of what makes Evolve feel like Evolve — and we’d love to have the whole family back together again.

😴 Can snoring affect your oral health?
In our latest Two Thirty video, Maggie answers a question many people don’t think to ask — can snoring impact your teeth and gums?
The short answer is yes, it can.
Snoring is often linked to breathing through your mouth at night, which can cause a dry mouth. Saliva plays an important role in protecting your teeth, so when your mouth is dry, you may be more prone to tooth decay and bad breath.
If you snore and have noticed dryness, increased decay or concerns about your breath, it’s worth mentioning at your next appointment.
Our reception team at Evolve Dentistry in Portishead will be happy to arrange a consultation if you’d like advice.

⏰ Smile hack: When you brush matters
Did you know it’s not just how long you brush — but when you brush — that makes a difference? Maggie shares an important smile hack about timing your toothbrushing properly.
Brushing straight after eating — especially after acidic foods or drinks like fruit, juice or coffee — can actually do more harm than good. Your enamel is slightly softened, and brushing immediately can cause wear.
Maggie explains the best time to brush and why waiting can help protect your teeth long term.
It’s a small change that can make a big difference to your oral health.

Whether you’re considering braces for yourself or your child, understanding the process can make the journey feel much more reassuring.
