Carol Somerville Roberts silver fillings

Why some patients choose to replace amalgam fillings – and how we support that choice safely

You may have heard people talk about replacing their silver (amalgam) fillings. While there’s no clinical requirement to remove them unless they’re damaged or decayed, some patients choose to have them replaced as part of a personal preference or holistic approach to their dental care.

At Evolve Dentistry, we respect that choice—and we’re here to support it with safety-led protocols designed to protect you throughout the process.

What is amalgam?

Amalgam is a durable material made from a mix of metals, including mercury. It’s been used for decades and is still considered safe by many dental authorities. However, some patients prefer alternative materials for personal, aesthetic, or lifestyle reasons.

What is the SMART protocol?

The SMART protocol (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique), developed by the IAOMT, involves a comprehensive set of protective measures to reduce potential exposure to mercury vapour during the removal of amalgam fillings.

At Evolve Dentistry, we use:

  • High-volume air filtration
  • Rubber dam isolation
  • Protective barriers for both patient and clinician
  • Specialised suction and water cooling

Why choose amalgam removal?

  • You prefer a tooth-coloured, metal-free smile
  • You’re on a wellness journey and want to align your dental care
  • You feel more comfortable without metal-based restorations

We won’t tell you that you need to remove your amalgam fillings—but if you decide it’s right for you, we’re here to provide the safest, most supportive experience possible.
