By Lisa, Specialist Orthodontist, Portishead
If you’re thinking about straightening your teeth, you may be wondering whether to see a dentist who offers orthodontics or a specialist orthodontist. At Evolve Dentistry in Portishead, we’re proud to offer both — and my role as a specialist orthodontist is to support patients whose teeth straightening needs require a higher level of planning and expertise.
After qualifying as a dentist, I went on to complete several additional years of full-time specialist orthodontic training. This advanced training focuses entirely on how teeth move, how bites fit together, and how the jaws develop and function. As a result, I regularly see patients with more complex orthodontic concerns, or those who want the reassurance of being treated by a specialist orthodontist.
Many patients choose to see me because they want that extra level of expertise from the very start. Others are referred to me — either by their own dentist or by one of our dentists here at Evolve Dentistry — because clinically, their case would benefit from specialist orthodontic care. This can include significant crowding, bite problems, teeth that haven’t come through as expected, or cases where previous orthodontic treatment hasn’t achieved the desired result.
At Evolve Dentistry, teamwork is incredibly important. Our general dentists provide orthodontic treatment for simple to moderate cases, and they do this very successfully. Every patient begins with a thorough assessment, and from there we decide together whether treatment is best carried out by one of our dentists or by me as the specialist orthodontist. This ensures you’re always seeing the right clinician for your individual needs — not being treated with a one-size-fits-all approach.
As a specialist orthodontist in Portishead, my focus goes beyond straightening teeth for appearance alone. I carefully consider how your teeth and bite will function long term, helping to create results that are comfortable, stable, and built to last.
If you’re looking for an orthodontist in Portishead and aren’t sure where to begin, the best first step is a consultation. Whether you’re suitable for treatment with one of our dentists or need specialist orthodontic care, we’ll guide you honestly and clearly, so you can feel confident in your decision and your smile.

🪥 Smile hack: timing your tooth brushing
Did you know that brushing your teeth straight after eating isn’t always the best idea?
In this quick video, Maggie explains why it’s better to wait a little while before brushing. After eating, especially acidic foods and drinks, the enamel on your teeth can be temporarily softened. Brushing too soon can actually cause more wear.
Waiting around 30 minutes gives your saliva time to neutralise the acids and protect your teeth.
Watch Maggie’s smile hack to learn the simple change that can help keep your teeth healthier.

What exactly is a dental crown?
In this video, Carol explains how crowns help restore and protect teeth that have been weakened by cracks, root canal treatment or large fillings.
A crown acts like a protective cap, binding the tooth together and giving it the strength it needs for everyday biting and chewing.
Watch the video to learn when a crown may be recommended and how it helps protect your smile.

Did you know that chewing sugar free gum after eating can actually help protect your teeth? 🍬➡️🦷
In this video, Carol explains why dentists often recommend sugar free gum after meals. Chewing gum stimulates saliva, which helps wash away food particles and neutralise acids that can lead to tooth decay.
It’s not a replacement for brushing, but it can be a helpful extra habit when you’re out and about and can’t brush your teeth straight away.
