What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are typically used in the following situations:

  1. To Protect a Weak Tooth: Crowns can help protect a tooth that has been weakened by decay or is at risk of breaking.
  2. To Restore a Broken or Worn-Down Tooth: If a tooth is cracked or severely worn down, a crown can restore its functionality and appearance.
  3. To Cover and Support a Tooth with a Large Filling: When a tooth has a large filling and not much natural tooth structure left, a crown can help hold the tooth together.
  4. To Hold a Dental Bridge in Place: Crowns are used on the teeth on either side of a gap to anchor a dental bridge.
  5. To Cover Misshapen or Discoloured Teeth: For cosmetic purposes, crowns can improve the appearance of teeth that are misshapen or severely discoloured.
  6. To Cover a Dental Implant: Crowns are placed on top of dental implants to replace missing teeth.

Types of dental crowns

  • Porcelain or Ceramic Crowns: These are popular for their natural look, as they can match the colour of your teeth. They are often used for front teeth.
  • Metal Crowns: Made from alloys containing gold, platinum, or base metals, these crowns are very durable and typically used for molars where they are less visible.
  • Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns (PFM): These crowns combine the strength of metal with the natural appearance of porcelain.
  • Resin Crowns: These are less expensive but also less durable, making them more prone to wear and fractures.

Procedure

The procedure for placing a dental crown usually involves two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to fit the crown. An impression of the tooth is then taken and sent to a lab where the crown is made. A temporary crown is placed on the tooth until the permanent one is ready. During the second visit, the permanent crown is cemented onto the tooth.

Benefits of dental crowns

Crowns are a highly effective way to protect damaged teeth, improve the appearance of teeth, and restore functionality. They can last for many years with proper care.

Overall, a dental crown is a versatile solution in restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

We’re excited to invite you to a special event we’re hosting at Evolve Dentistry on Monday 15th December, and we’d love for you to be part of it.

From 10am to 3pm, we’ll be running a Cyclathon at the practice to help raise funds for Bridge2Aid, a charity providing vital emergency dental care and training in communities that need it most.

This year, our very own Carol Somerville Roberts is taking on the incredible Peaks to Plains Safari Cycle Challenge in Tanzania, and this event is part of her fundraising efforts.

How you can get involved:

🚴‍♂️ Hop on a bike – join us for a few minutes (or more!) and help us cover as many miles as possible.

💙 Come along to cheer us on – your support means so much.

📱 Make a donation on the day – we’ll have SumUp, cash collection, and QR code donation options available.

If the weather is kind, we’ll be cycling outside Evolve; if not, we’ll set up indoors, so the event will go ahead either way.

Whether you’re keen to pedal or just pop by to show your support, we’d absolutely love to see you there. Every mile and every pound makes a real difference to the communities Bridge2Aid supports.

Thank you in advance for your kindness and encouragement — it means the world to us and to Carol.

✨ What is amalgam removal — and when do we use the SMART protocol?

In this video, Carol Somerville Roberts explains what amalgam removal involves and the different options available to patients.

Some patients choose to have their amalgam fillings replaced for cosmetic reasons, while others request that the removal is carried out using the SMART protocol.

For those who request the SMART protocol, it provides an enhanced approach designed to minimise exposure during the procedure, with additional safety measures for both patients and our team.

If you’re considering having your amalgam fillings replaced — with or without the SMART protocol — our team is here to guide you through your options. 💙
