Yellow teeth

Why are my teeth yellow?

Why are my teeth yellow?

Foods that contain high levels of tannin can cause your teeth to stain, these are commonly found in red wine, tea, coffee. These tannins get into the enamel of your teeth and can cause long term colour changes.

Teeth can also start yellowing as we get older, it’s part of the natural ageing process. The enamel can thin over time due to everyday wear and tear, revealing the natural dentine colour. In addition to this, the dentine underlying the enamel gets thicker throughout your life, making the colour of the tooth more dense and therefore appear darker.

Is it bad that my teeth are yellow?

The yellowish colour of dentine shows through enamel of your tooth in almost everyone, however, some people do have thinner or more translucent enamel, which will result in your teeth appearing yellower than others. Equally, as explained above, when the dentine becomes more dense, it also makes the tooth darker. It doesn’t necessarily mean that there is something wrong with your teeth, but if you are concerned it would be worth discussing with your dentist at your next check up.

Can you get yellow teeth white again?

It’s possible to improve the colour of your teeth and get them whiter and brighter. A visit to the hygienist will help to remove some stains, following this you can whiten your teeth. It’s worth mentioning that tooth whitening can only be legally carried out by a registered dental professional.

Are yellow teeth permanent?

It is possible to improve the appearance of your teeth through the use of professional tooth whitening treatments. You will need to visit a dentist to ensure that your oral health is suitable for the treatment before commencing. All whitening should be carried out under prescription by a dentist and by a dental care professional. Be careful of whitening toothpastes as these can be very abrasive and therefore damaging to teeth.

Can you rebuild tooth enamel?

Once enamel is damaged, it’s not possible to bring it back. It may be possible to improve it to some degree, by improving the mineral content. Toothpastes can’t rebuild enamel, but they may be able to assist with the remineralisation process.
