We often hear from patients that they do not like the fact that their teeth are ‘yellow’, we take time to explain to them why this happens and what options are available to them to improve the appearance of their teeth.
Why do I have yellow teeth?
Teeth are made up of enamel, dentine and the pulp which contains blood vessels and the nerve tissue. The colour of our teeth is largely determined by the thickness of dentine, the more dentine, the darker the tooth. As we get older, it’s natural for our teeth to yellow slightly as more dentine is laid down. Avoiding food that stains teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine and smoking can also help reduce any change in colour.
Can yellow teeth be whitened?
Tooth whitening can be a very successful treatment for improving the colour of your teeth. Whitening treatments must be under the direction of a dental professional to whiten your teeth. Anyone else offering teeth whitening other than a dental healthcare professional is not acting legally and is breaking the law.
How else can you fix yellow teeth?
Foods that stain your teeth should be avoided, such as tea, coffee & red wine. Smoking should also be avoided as this can stain the teeth as well. If you take milk with your tea, it will reduce the staining as well as reducing the amount of time that you allow your tea to brew.
