The 5 Biggest Myths About Cosmetic Dentistry

Name: Evolve Dentistry
Price range: $$

At Evolve Dentistry, we often hear a range of misconceptions about what a cosmetic dentist actually does and how cosmetic dentistry can impact your smile. Whether it’s from outdated information or online myths, these misconceptions can stop people from seeking treatments that could truly boost their confidence.

Here are the five biggest myths about cosmetic dentistry—debunked.

1. Cosmetic dentistry is only about looks

One of the most common myths is that cosmetic dentistry is purely aesthetic. While improving the appearance of your smile is a key focus, many cosmetic treatments also enhance function. For example, veneers can strengthen weakened teeth, and orthodontics can improve bite alignment, reducing jaw pain and wear on teeth.

2. It’s only for the wealthy

You don’t have to be a celebrity to see a cosmetic dentist. At Evolve Dentistry, we offer a range of affordable cosmetic treatments with flexible finance options. From teeth whitening to composite bonding, we tailor treatments to suit both your smile and your budget.

3. The results don’t look natural

Today’s cosmetic dentistry is more advanced than ever. Materials and techniques have evolved to provide incredibly natural-looking results. Whether it’s whitening or veneers, your cosmetic dentist will work closely with you to ensure a result that complements your features—not one-size-fits-all.

4. Cosmetic procedures are painful

Thanks to modern technology and gentle techniques, most cosmetic dental treatments involve minimal discomfort. Procedures such as whitening or bonding are often pain-free, and sedation options are available for those who feel anxious.

5. Cosmetic dentistry damages teeth

This is a dangerous myth. When performed correctly by an experienced cosmetic dentist, procedures are safe and often preserve more of the natural tooth than traditional methods. At Evolve Dentistry, we prioritise minimally invasive techniques to protect your long-term oral health.

If you’re considering replacing an amalgam filling, you may have come across the term SMART.

SMART stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. It is a protocol designed to reduce exposure to mercury vapour and particles while an amalgam filling is being removed.

At Evolve, SMART amalgam removal is available for adults who have made an informed decision to replace their amalgam fillings.

Importantly, we don’t suggest that everyone should have their amalgam fillings removed, and we don’t make claims that removing them will improve your general health.

Swipe through for a simple explanation of what the SMART approach involves.

Gum disease can be surprisingly easy to overlook.

Bleeding when you brush, red or swollen gums, persistent bad breath or gums that seem to be receding are all things worth paying attention to.

The important thing is not to wait until something hurts. Gum disease can develop without causing pain, which is one reason regular dental and hygiene appointments matter.

In this short video, Yasmin explains some of the signs to look out for.

If you’ve noticed a change in your gums, mention it at your next appointment or get in touch with the team.

Carol has sent us the first photos from her trip — and what a first day it’s been!

Working alongside five other dentists, the team saw an incredible 197 patients in just one day. ❤️

In Carol’s words:

“I’ve taken out more teeth today than I have in the past year!”

A very different day in dentistry from the ones Carol is used to back home at Evolve, and a reminder of just how much need there is for the care the team is providing.

Evolve is an excellent dental practice, fulfilling all my needs. When I needed to make an emergency appointment I was offered on the following day and the appointment was made efficiently. The receptionist checked through my symptoms thoroughly and was most helpful.

Carol replaced all of my amalgams for me. I had a full set since the age of 11, and had hated them all my life. I hadn't had them replaced up to now due to my fear of what the process might entail. However, I can honestly say that I felt safe and looked after during the whole procedure and I am very pleased with the result. I cannot recommend Evolve highly enough.

I just wanted to take a moment to say how absolutely delighted I am with my composite bonding treatment.I’ve put together a side-by-side before and after photo, and the transformation is truly incredible. I can’t believe the difference—it has completely exceeded my expectations and has given me such a boost in confidence.Richard did an amazing job. His attention to detail and care really show in the final result, and I couldn’t be happier.Thank you again to the whole team for such a fantastic experience. She made the whole process feel easy and reassuring.Mike Gregory and his assistant Jess were excellent throughout. It looks incredibly natural.Mike and Jess were extremely professional, skilled and kind, and the care and attention to detail were outstanding.Thank you Mike for giving me my smile backThis has genuinely been the best dental service I have ever experienced and I would highly recommend them to anyone considering dental treatment

If you’re considering Invisalign, I highly recommend Evolve Dentistry. Yasmin has been incredibly supportive throughout the entire process, and I have always felt comfortable reaching out to her with any questions. She takes the time to explain everything clearly and makes you feel completely at ease. The support doesn’t just stop once your treatment is finished either - the aftercare and continued guidance really show how much they care about their patients. I am so pleased with my experience and results!

Evolve Dentistry, was recommended to me by Una Miles, who is my dentist. On arriving at my appointment with Evolve, I was made to feel really welcome by all who work there.I am a very anxious person, but didn't need to worry, had X rays done a chat with Julie about my expectations. Then seen Mike who will be dealing with my dental issues, a very understanding person, who made me feel a lot more at ease. 😀

Such a great Dentist! Both my daughter and I are registered and have always received excellent service. My daughter has just had her braces removed after 18 months of top care from Lisa and her team. As a dentophobic I have been so impressed by Carol and her team who have helped to heal my anxiety. I would absolutely recommend.

I needed eight amalgam fillings removed using the SMART protocol, which ensures removal is done as safely as possible. I researched dental practices adhering to this practice near to where I lived. There were a couple but I chose Evolve dentistry in Portishead even though it was neally 40 miles from my house. They were the most efficient and caring of the two. All the staff ensured that my whole experience went smoothly, which really eased my anxiety. If you have any queries they are always answered very promptly. I felt very relaxed in Carol's hands as she is very experienced in amalgam filling removal, I hardly felt the injections and although the process could look quite daunting it really wasn't. I had them removed in three sessions and after my first session I knew what to expect and I was not anxious at all for the following two sessions. I would highly recommend Carol and her dental practice to anyone looking to have amalgam fillings removal done. Thank you so much Carol and all your team for such an excellent experience.

I am new to Evolve, choosing to come as my previous dentist Richard Ford is there and I also read their excellent reviews. I rang with a problem and was given an appointment the next day. When I arrived the receptionist and treatment coordinator were very welcoming, friendly and reassuring.Richard was so kind and spent a lot of time discussing the problem I had, he was then able to spend the next hour treating me as my wisdom tooth needed to be removed urgently. This was done with no pain and lots of reassurance. I am so grateful to everyone at Evolve for making this such a positive experience, I felt so well looked after. I am so pleased to now be a patient here and would recommend Evolve wholeheartedly. Thank you all so much.

I came to Evolve as a nervous patient after years of hating going to the dentist because of the pain and discomfort I would experience every time. Richard changed all of that.He is personable, courteous and kind, and never too busy to take the time to talk things through in as much detail as I want. I’ve learnt so much about my personal dental health from him - things that no dentist has ever pointed out to me before. The treatments I’ve had with Richard have been completely pain free and my nerves about going to the dentist have now disappeared. The whole experience of going to Evolve is fantastic, from as soon as you step in the door. The reception staff and treatment coordinators are always lovely.I’m so glad I chose Evolve and would highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a new dentist.

I went into surgery after an accident and the lady on reception was so kind and booked me to be seen very quickly by Dr Ford, my mouth was very swollen and painful but he was so gentle looking to see what had happened, treatment was explained and then time was made that day for it to get me out of pain.I was very nervous of my tooth being touched, but Dr Ford took such care and patience and made sure I was comfortable throughout the procedure and didn’t feel pain, he even then fashioned my tooth so it looked like nothing had happened!

I had a great experience at evolve, I was greeted with a wonderful warm welcome from Nicky C at the reception, their friendliness and hospitality set a positive tone for my visit. Richard provided exceptional attentiveness and thoroughness throughout the procedure. His professionalism and warm demeanour made me feel very comfortable and confident in the process.

I was an incredibly nervous patient & I can whole heartedly recommend Evolve for anyone who feels nervous. Once you’ve been to Evolve you understand why they have so many awards. I’ve been blown away by their understanding, patience and kindness. Richard, Maisie, Julie & Nicky are all amazing. But no matter who you deal with either on the phone, on reception or walking round the practice literally everyone smiles and is welcoming. My nervousness has reduced and having contacted them initially for some emergency treatment, I have a joined the practice and just feel relieved that I chose them.

I rather nervously came to Evolve several years ago having not visited a dentist in a very long time, with teeth and gums in a sorry state. Following an initial few sessions where I was able to request numbing, I eased into a consistent routine of check-ups and hygienist visits, resulting in teeth of which I am no longer ashamed. Visiting the dentist holds no trepidation for me now; the levels of care and treatment at Evolve are excellent, and the pleasant surroundings make the experience that little bit more comfortable.

I had dentures made at Evolve Dentistry in Portishead by Mike and his assistant Jess, and I honestly cannot thank them enough.Mike is truly special. He’s refreshingly honest and straight-talking – no sugar-coating, no false promises – just clear and direct about what he was going to do and what to expect. I found that honesty so reassuring. And then there’s Jess, who is warm, calming and so supportive throughout. Together they make the perfect team: Mike’s skill and precision, with Jess’s kindness and care. They really are phenomenal at what they do.The change has been incredible. I underestimated just how good the result would be. My new smile has given me a whole new sense of confidence. I’m 58, and I was so worried dentures would look obvious or make me look older – but it’s been the complete opposite. People kept saying I looked brighter, like I’d been on holiday, without realising it was my smile. They couldn’t tell at all that I had dentures, which is amazing.I deliberately waited before writing this review, to be sure it wasn’t just the excitement of something new. But even after time has passed, I’m still blown away. Yes, some foods feel a bit different (crisps, for example), but you adapt quickly, and the positives far outweigh any small changes. The whole process was painless – I never once needed a painkiller. My gums have healed beautifully, and in time I may need a small adjustment, but that’s all part of the journey. Most importantly, this has changed how I feel about myself. With my first grandchild on the way, I can’t wait to smile proudly in photos instead of hiding from the camera. From the receptionist who greeted me, to Julie my wellbeing person, and especially Mike and Jess – thank you for the phenomenal job you’ve done. You’ve not just given me new teeth, you’ve given me back my smile and my confidence.

I joined Evolve a couple of months ago and their customer service, treatment plan and the dentist they have assigned me to are absolutely brilliant. Plus the monthly plan I chose is affordable for myself and my family. When you walk into the surgery, you feel like you're in a 5 star hotel and you feel so welcome and comfortable. Thank you, Evolve.

I cannot praise Evolve Dentistry highly enough but with a few words I will try. From the moment I walked into the practice, meeting the front of house and consultation team, I knew I had made the right decision and I felt that I was in safe hands. Their dedication to customer care comes across as paramount. I was made to feel at ease, all my fears listened to and I truly felt, for the first time in my life, comfortable at a dentists! Mike Gregory, my dentist, in my humble opinion is a genius. It really was like trusting someone with your life, your future and I cannot thank you and your lovely team enough for making me feel part of the Evolve family and the excellent, exceptional results I received. This practice is more than 5+ star 🌟Highly recommended 👌

My mum's experience at Evolve Dentistry has been truly first-class. She did not think that she would be able to tolerate a full upper denture but Mike Gregory worked a miracle and she is extremely happy with her new denture. The whole team at Evolve is extremely friendly, professional and welcoming and if you are someone who is nervous about going to the dentist or has been told elsewhere that a certain treatment probably won't work for you, try Evolve Dentistry before you give up.

During lockdown my gums became very badly inflamed as I couldn't attend my 3 monthly hygienist appts...On movingbyo Portishead I signed on with Evolve who referred me to a private specialist Orthodontist. This meant a sustained period of specialist treatments to get the inflammation under control ..I am now on a maintenance programme & Evolve ultimately we're able to fit a porcelain crown to save a tooth that was in a poor condition. In effect they've given me my smile back.[ It's great that they have interest free loans too]The Team are pleasant, explain things clearly . I recently had my 6 months check up & so relieved to know I've come out the other side.Thank you !!

I hadn’t been to the dentist in 4 years, and had a fear of them, and then fell in the rain and knocked my bridge and 2 teeth out. I phoned in a panic, Nickie was lovely and calming on the phone. I saw dentist Carol that morning, who explained my options. I subsequently had 2 roots removed (absolutely no pain) and now have a new temporary bridge. Everyone, receptionist, dentist, hygienist , dental nurse was calm and gentle and worked at my pace. I am so lucky to have a fabulous team care for me. Thank you

Heard Phillip

22:34 13 Feb 25

It’s Debbie Heard from my husband’s Google account.I’ve recently had treatment with Evolve Dentistry. As a child I had poor teeth & gums so it’s always been a ‘thing’! I’ve been ashamed, embarrassed, always had tooth envy. I was told by a dentist at the age of 12 that I would be toothless before I was 30, I proved him wrong & had crowns & bridges fitted & managed to have teeth that looked aesthetically pleasing for a further 30 years. It all came to a head approximately 3 years ago when I had to wear a partial denture. To me it was the end of the world but I amazed myself & adjusted. In October 2024 I had the remainder of my upper teeth removed & had teeth added to my partial as a temporary measure. My current dentist who also is amazing referred me to Mike Gregory at Evolve as she assured me he would do a much better job than she could. My experience at Evolve was second to none from the get go. I met with Julie initially, one of the treatment co-ordinators. She explained how things would pan out over the next couple of months. Nicky on reception was so kind, she put me at ease immediately. Mike & his nurse Jess did exactly the same, I felt so comfortable with them all. My first appointments to the last which was yesterday 12th February were a pleasure, every single person who works at Evolve is amazing! They all go above & beyond. I am delighted with the final result, nobody would ever know I’m wearing a denture. I would recommend to anyone, you will not get better treatment anywhere. Thank you Evolve, you are awesome xxxx

Carole & her team are absolutely amazing, the care and treatment is superb.I am terrified of dentistry work from many bad experiences when I was younger from other dentists. To get me to go to the Dentist fills me with so much anxiety & panic attacks but the moment I go through the doors Carole’s team reassure and make you comfortable. My treatments are done with sedation by Carol carrying out the treatment whilst giving lovely calming care. The sedation process is great and you have nothing to worry about Thank you Carole & The Team x

I was treated with courtesy and friendliness by all the staff , and as a new guest, I felt welcome.Every part of the treatment was fully explained and my comfort was utmost in the mind of Dr Yasmin Zeina during and after the procedure. A follow up call the next day, to check all was well, was also appreciated.

Evolve came recommended and didn’t disappoint, Yasmin and Mike are both at the top end the of game and absolute perfectionists! not to forget there support team who where always friendly and helpful, the reception knew I wanted my treatment completed asap and always called when there was opportunity to move appointments forward. I arrived at evolve with missing teeth, a mouth full of black fillings and a nhs denture that I couldn’t get on with, so I just never wore. I just wanted my old smile back. from day one I’ve been given multiple options to suit my budget and never pushed any given way, I now have better teeth than before! Yasmin remodelled my front teeth and replaced my fillings while Mike made my denture which I hardly know is there and could eat and drink with straight away, the team really invested in helping me and I’m truly grateful, I would highly recommend

This dentist really cares about people who have a fear of them, they have always treated me with the empathy and the care I needed to put me at my ease and have given me the confidence that I can trust them 100% so I can fulfil my treatment without fear. I have tried other dentists before and never went back because I wasn't happy and more scared than ever. So i really am a nervous patient. Yet ive had dentures from them and teeth extracted with sedation and felt safe and not terrified as i trust them with everything that they told me. Every member of staff is caring and aware of your needs and do their best to make you feel safe and confident. Carol is amazing and for the years I have been there it was a decision that really gave me my confidence back and a dentist that I turn to when I need work done. I would never go anywhere else as I feel grateful I'm one of their patients.

Evolve have been looking after my teeth for many years. They are always extremely professional, very welcoming, and give excellent advice and treatments. I can highly recommend them and feel in very safe hands after some less pleasant experiences with a few NHS dentists. Evolve go that extra mile to make the service really personable which I really appreciate.

Excellent customer care from the entire team at Evolve. Very friendly, informative and professional. The surgery is immaculate. Was very impressed to also see how my three year old daughter was looked after too, whilst having one of her first dentist appointments.

I’ve been with evolve for at least 10 years if not longer. They make me feel safe and they listen to my needs and requests. They have always done good work and if anything hasn’t been quite right they have rectified it immediately. I think the greatest testament to their services is that I travel 2h from Surrey to see them.

I travel Two hours to attend my appointment here to have all of the amalgams taken out. 12 teeth in all. Two for each appointment. Its worth it. I wouldn't go anywhere else. I have had a fear of dentists all my life but had to take a chance with this particular treatment because of my condition. It's specialized as safety measures have to be in place. There was no need to worry at all. I was made to feel so relaxed and the treatment never hurt one tiny bit. If you fear this particular treatment,go to Evolve. You will not be disappointed 😊 My teeth look and feel fantastic. Thank you. Marie Yeo.

I was cautious attending my first appointment, I'd had historical issues with a dentist from another practice in the past. I needn't of worried, I was truly looked after from the moment I arrived and was thoughtfully consulted with before the initial examination and a clear and easy to comprehend treatment plan proposal shared. The service and care are exceptional and I highly recommend this practice!

I work at Evolve so I know it’s an amazing place. However, I had toothache and I have had to have a tooth out today. Not something I have any experience of and I was so nervous. Carol is an expert at pain free treatment and looked after me so well. Teeth can be tricky and she removed it effortlessly. Everyone was so kind and supportive. Can’t thank them enough.

After a lifetime of wonky teeth I decided to get them straightened and went to Evolve for a consultation. From the moment I walked in the door I felt I was in safe hands. Julie firstly discussed with me the 2 options for teeth straightening - Invisalign or ceramic fixed brace. I then had a consultation with Carol who discussed the options with me further. I never felt rushed or under any pressure to chose a specific one, if in fact any. I have chosen to go with Ceramic Fixed braces and it will take roughly 9 - 12 months. I am currently 3 months in and already friends and family are amazed at the difference. Most people cannot actually see the braces when I am smiling or speaking, but my teeth are already so much straighter. Evolve continue to support my journey and I am so happy I researched reputable Dentists and found the Team at Evolve. Everyone there is so happy and professional, you can tell it is a good place to work. I feel safe, heard, and my hopes for a beautiful smile are understood by the whole team. I don't believe anyone would regret going to Evolve, but you very well might regret NOT going :o)

Evolve has been my Dentist since 2012, the team has remained the friendly practice with continual commitment to my needs since the beginning. The little things matter and make for the experience each and every time a pleasure instead of a chore.By the way the dental chair is so comfortable I have on occasion drifted off! I should also mention that’s due to gentle methods when performing treatment.

I was absolutely petrified to go to the dentist due to childhood experiences/trauma many years ago. It took some courage walking through the doors of Evolve Dentistry, however I needn’t had worried as the staff from the Reception Ladies, Julie in the office, the hygienists and a special mention for my dentist Yasmin were all super friendly, put me at ease with their patience and understanding, talked through all my worries and didn’t push for me to have anything done until I was feeling ready. I’ve now had a few procedures the most recent being composite bonding which I am absolutely thrilled with, along with healthy oral hygiene I can finally smile again without feeling embarrassed about my teeth. Have a review booked and am at the stage now I trust them so much I can actually look forward to my on going appointments. Thank you all Evolve team

Visited Evolve after a recommendation. Had an initial consultation chat and then a full check up and xrays with Yasmin. We discussed the results of my check up and also what I wanted from my smile. That's something that was never discussed with my previous dentist.I took the monthly plan offered and came away with costings for other work I wanted done.I'm just gutted I left it so late to find such a wonderful and welcoming practice. All the staff are so friendly and take the time to explain everything from treatment to payment and plans.Thoroughly recommend
