The early signs of gum disease you shouldn’t ignore

Gum disease is one of the most common oral health problems, yet many people don’t realise they have it until it becomes more advanced. In its early stages it can be painless, which is why it is often overlooked.

Recognising the early signs of gum disease and seeking treatment early can help protect both your gums and your teeth.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease occurs when plaque bacteria build up around the teeth and irritate the gums.

If plaque is not removed regularly through brushing and cleaning between the teeth, it can cause inflammation in the gums. The earliest stage of gum disease is called gingivitis.

Gingivitis is common but is usually reversible with the right care.

Early signs to look out for

Because gum disease often develops gradually, the early symptoms can be easy to miss.

Some of the most common early signs include:

  • bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • red or swollen gums
  • gums that feel tender
  • persistent bad breath
  • gums that look slightly darker than usual

If you notice any of these symptoms, it is a good idea to book an examination so your gum health can be assessed.

What happens if gum disease progresses?

If gingivitis is not treated, it can develop into a more advanced form of gum disease known as periodontitis.

At this stage the infection can begin to affect the bone supporting the teeth.

This may lead to:

  • gum recession
  • teeth appearing longer
  • loose teeth
  • changes in your bite

Early treatment is the best way to prevent these complications.

How gum disease is treated

Treatment focuses on removing plaque and tartar from around the teeth and improving daily oral hygiene.

This may include:

  • professional cleaning with a hygienist
  • advice on brushing and cleaning between the teeth
  • regular maintenance visits to keep gums healthy

Many patients notice significant improvement once plaque and tartar have been removed.

Protecting your gum health

The best way to prevent gum disease is through a combination of good daily home care and regular dental examinations.

Attending routine appointments allows us to monitor your gum health and provide early treatment if needed.

Looking after your gums plays an important role in protecting your overall oral health and helping you keep your teeth for the long term.

Still feeling incredibly proud

A few months on, and we’re still celebrating Carol Somerville Roberts in her role as President of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

It’s something we don’t take lightly - representing the profession at this level, while continuing to care for patients here at the practice, is no small thing.

What makes us most proud is that nothing changes for our patients. The same calm approach. The same honest advice. The same focus on doing what’s right for you.

Just with a little extra recognition behind it.

A big moment for Carol - and a proud one for all of us at Evolve.
