Sensitive teeth

What causes sensitive teeth and how can you treat it?

Have you ever felt a sharp twinge when drinking a cold glass of water, enjoying an ice cream, or sipping a hot cup of tea? If so, you’re not alone. Sensitive teeth are a common dental concern that can affect people of all ages.

The good news is that tooth sensitivity is often treatable once the underlying cause has been identified.

What causes sensitive teeth?

Tooth sensitivity occurs when the protective layers of the tooth become worn or damaged, exposing the dentine underneath. Dentine contains tiny channels that lead directly to the nerve inside the tooth, making it more sensitive to temperature changes and certain foods and drinks.

Some of the most common causes include:

Worn enamel

Enamel is the hard outer surface of the tooth. Over time, enamel can wear down due to:

  • Brushing too hard
  • Using a hard-bristled toothbrush
  • Frequent consumption of acidic foods and drinks
  • Teeth grinding or clenching

Receding gums

As gums recede, the tooth root becomes exposed. Unlike the crown of the tooth, the root does not have a protective enamel layer, making it more vulnerable to sensitivity.

Tooth decay

Cavities can create pathways for heat, cold and sweet foods to reach the nerve more easily, resulting in discomfort.

Cracked or damaged teeth

Even small cracks can allow sensations to travel to the inner part of the tooth and cause pain.

Recent dental treatment

It is normal to experience temporary sensitivity after some dental treatments, including whitening, fillings or hygiene appointments. This usually settles within a few days or weeks.

Gum disease

Inflamed or receding gums associated with gum disease can contribute to tooth sensitivity and should be assessed promptly.

How can sensitive teeth be treated?

The most appropriate treatment depends on the cause of the sensitivity.

Use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth

Specially formulated toothpastes can help block the pathways that lead to the tooth nerve. Consistent use is important, and it may take several weeks to notice an improvement.

Improve your brushing technique

Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle brushing technique can help prevent further enamel wear and gum recession.

Reduce acidic foods and drinks

Fizzy drinks, citrus fruits, sports drinks and fruit juices can contribute to enamel erosion. Limiting these and rinsing with water afterwards can help protect your teeth.

Wear a protective appliance

If teeth grinding is contributing to sensitivity, a custom-made night appliance may help protect your teeth from further wear.

Dental treatment

Where sensitivity is caused by tooth decay, a damaged filling, gum recession or another dental problem, professional treatment may be required to address the underlying issue.

Can sensitive teeth be prevented?

In many cases, yes.

You can reduce your risk of developing tooth sensitivity by:

  • Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Using a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Avoiding aggressive brushing
  • Limiting acidic foods and drinks
  • Wearing a protective appliance if you grind your teeth
  • Attending regular dental examinations and hygiene appointments

When should you seek advice?

Occasional sensitivity is common, but persistent or worsening symptoms should always be checked.

You should arrange an appointment if:

  • Sensitivity lasts for more than a few weeks
  • The pain is becoming more severe
  • Only one tooth is affected
  • You notice a crack, hole or damage to a tooth
  • You have swollen, bleeding or receding gums

A dental examination can identify the cause and help prevent a more significant problem from developing.

One of the biggest reasons adults choose clear aligners? ✨

They fit seamlessly into everyday life.

Many people worry that teeth straightening will be obvious, but modern aligners are designed to be as discreet as possible. Made from clear plastic and custom-fitted to your teeth, they’re often barely noticeable when you’re talking, smiling or going about your day.

In fact, many of our patients tell us that friends, family and colleagues don’t realise they’re wearing aligners until they mention it!

If you’ve been putting off straightening your teeth because you’re concerned about how braces might look, clear aligners could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

🦷 Dental myth or dental fact? 🤔

One of the most common myths we hear is that teeth whitening is bad for your teeth.

In this video, Maggie explains why professionally prescribed teeth whitening is a safe and effective way to brighten your smile when carried out under the guidance of a dental professional.

Unfortunately, misinformation can stop people from exploring treatments that could help them feel more confident about their smile. That’s why we’re passionate about sharing trusted advice and helping patients make informed decisions about their oral health.

It’s a question we hear all the time.

In this video, our Therapist Flora explains how sugary drinks can affect your teeth and why it’s not just the amount of sugar that matters, but how often you’re having it throughout the day.

The good news? You don’t have to give up all your favourite drinks. A few simple changes can make a big difference to your oral health.

Watch Flora’s advice and let us know if there’s a dental question you’d like us to answer next.
