What you may feel during treatment and afterwards

Will I have local anaesthetic?

Local anaesthetic can be used to numb the tooth and surrounding tissues.

Once the area is numb, the aim is that you should not experience the sharp sensation associated with treatment of an unanaesthetised tooth.

However, dental anaesthetic does not remove every sensation.

You may still be aware of:

• pressure
• vibration
• water
• suction
• sound
• movement around the tooth

• other protective equipment

These sensations are normal during restorative treatment and are different from pain.

What does the SMART setup feel like?

SMART stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique.

What does a rubber dam feel like?

A rubber dam is a flexible sheet placed around the tooth being treated.

It creates a barrier between the treatment area and the rest of the mouth.

You continue breathing through your nose.

Some patients find the sensation unusual at first. Others find it reassuring because water and debris are kept away from the rest of the mouth.

Can I communicate during treatment?

Yes.
