Looking after your retainers

Looking after your retainers

How to protect your smile after orthodontic treatment

Short answer: Retainers help keep your teeth in their new position after orthodontic treatment. Looking after them properly—and wearing them as advised—is one of the most important ways to protect the smile you’ve worked so hard to achieve.

Reaching the end of orthodontic treatment is an exciting milestone.

Your braces have come off.

Or you’ve finished wearing your final aligner.

Your new smile is exactly where you hoped it would be.

But your orthodontic journey isn’t quite over.

The final stage is one of the most important:

Looking after your retainers.

Why retainers matter

Your teeth have successfully moved into new positions.

However, they need time to settle.

Without retention, teeth naturally have a tendency to drift over time.

Retainers help hold your teeth in their new position while the surrounding tissues adapt.

They’re what protect the investment you’ve made in your smile.

Wearing your retainers

Your orthodontist will explain exactly how and when to wear your retainers.

Every patient is different.

Following those instructions gives your smile the best chance of staying exactly where you want it.

If you’re ever unsure, simply ask.

We’re always happy to help.

Looking after removable retainers

Removable retainers should be treated with care.

Simple habits can make a big difference:

  • Remove them carefully.
  • Clean them regularly using the method we’ve recommended.
  • Store them safely in their protective case.
  • Keep them away from pets—they’re surprisingly attractive chew toys!
  • Never wrap them in a tissue or napkin, where they’re easily thrown away.

Taking care of your retainers helps them continue protecting your smile.

What about fixed retainers?

Some patients have a fixed retainer attached discreetly behind their front teeth.

Although you don’t remove it, it still needs looking after.

Good brushing and cleaning around the wire are important to help keep your teeth and gums healthy.

We’ll show you the best way to clean around your retainer before treatment finishes.

The Evolve perspective

Many people think the braces create the result.

In reality, retainers help preserve it.

Orthodontic treatment isn’t just about creating a beautiful smile.

It’s about helping that smile last for many years to come.

That’s why we spend time explaining retention—it deserves just as much attention as the treatment itself.

What if my retainer breaks?

Accidents happen.

If your retainer cracks, becomes damaged or no longer fits comfortably, don’t ignore it.

Contact us as soon as possible.

The sooner we know, the easier it usually is to help keep your smile on track.

What if I lose my retainer?

Losing a retainer can happen to anyone.

If it happens:

  • Contact us promptly.
  • Don’t wait to see if your teeth move.
  • We’ll advise you on the best next step.

Replacing a retainer early is often much simpler than correcting unwanted tooth movement later.

Cleaning your retainers

Keeping retainers clean helps them stay fresh and comfortable.

We’ll explain the best way to care for your specific retainer before you complete treatment.

Avoid using very hot water, as this may damage removable retainers.

Myth vs reality

Myth

Once my braces come off, treatment is finished.

Reality

Retention is an essential part of successful orthodontic treatment.

Myth

I don’t need my retainers if my teeth look straight.

Reality

Retainers help keep them that way.

Myth

If I lose a retainer, it doesn’t matter.

Reality

The sooner it’s replaced, the better the chance of maintaining your result.

Questions patients often ask

How long will I need to wear my retainers?

We’ll give you personalised advice based on your treatment and smile.

What if my retainer feels tight?

This may indicate your teeth have started to move slightly.

Contact us so we can advise you.

Can I eat with removable retainers?

No.

Remove them before eating and replace them afterwards once you’ve cleaned your teeth where possible.

What happens if my dog eats my retainer?

It happens more often than you’d think!

Contact us and we’ll help arrange a replacement.

✨ How can you keep your teeth white?

In this short video, Dr Richard Ford shares some simple ways to help keep your smile looking its best:

• Attend regular hygiene appointments to help remove surface staining.
• Brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste.
• Be mindful of foods and drinks that can cause staining, such as black coffee, red wine and turmeric.
• If you’d like a brighter smile, professional teeth whitening is a safe and effective option.

The reality is that teeth naturally pick up stains over time. The good news is that a few simple habits can make a real difference.

If you’re thinking about whitening your teeth, or you’re not sure which option is right for you, we’re always happy to help you understand your choices with no pressure.

Will composite bonding damage my teeth?

It’s a common concern, especially for patients who want to improve their smile while protecting their natural teeth.

The good news is that composite bonding is often one of the most conservative cosmetic dental treatments available. In many cases, little or no preparation of the tooth is required, meaning your natural tooth structure can be preserved.

Composite bonding can be used to improve the appearance of:

✔ Chipped teeth
✔ Small gaps between teeth
✔ Uneven tooth shapes
✔ Worn edges
✔ Minor imperfections

Because the treatment is minimally invasive, many patients choose composite bonding when they want to enhance their smile without significant changes to their natural teeth.

Every smile is unique, so we’ll always discuss your options and explain exactly what’s involved before any treatment begins.

Reading comments like this reminds us why we do what we do.

Helping people feel comfortable and cared for is just as important as providing great dentistry.

Thank you for your kind words.
You could be grinding your teeth every night… without even knowing it. 😴

Many people assume they’d know if they were clenching or grinding their teeth.

In reality, most don’t.

As Richard explains, while we’re asleep our brains continue processing the events and stresses of the day. For some people, that stress is released through clenching or grinding their teeth - but because the part of the brain that would normally recognise it is effectively switched off during sleep, we often have no idea it’s happening.

Over time, tooth grinding can contribute to:
• Worn or chipped teeth
• Jaw pain or stiffness
• Morning headaches
• Sensitive teeth
• Disrupted sleep

If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, it’s worth mentioning them at your next appointment. We can look for the signs of tooth grinding and discuss ways to help protect your teeth before more damage occurs.

Have you ever been told you grind your teeth, or has someone heard you doing it while you sleep?
