Short answer: Probably not.
One of the biggest myths about orthodontic treatment is that braces are only for teenagers. The reality is very different. Healthy teeth can often be moved successfully at almost any age, which is why more adults than ever are choosing to straighten their teeth.
The important question isn’t “Am I too old?”
It’s “Am I suitable?”
That’s exactly what we’ll help you understand in this guide.
Why so many adults think they’ve missed their chance
If you’ve been wondering whether you’re too old for braces, you’re certainly not alone.
In fact, it’s one of the first questions we hear from adults considering orthodontic treatment.
Some people tell us they always wanted braces but never had the opportunity.
Others had treatment as teenagers and have noticed their teeth gradually moving over the years.
Many simply assume they’ve left it too late.
It’s an understandable concern.
For many years, braces were seen as something that happened during your teenage years. If you didn’t have treatment then, it often felt as though the opportunity had passed.
Thankfully, orthodontics has changed dramatically.
Today, adults of all ages choose orthodontic treatment for many different reasons—and in many cases, age itself isn’t the deciding factor.
When assessing whether braces are right for you, we don’t start by looking at your date of birth.
Instead, we consider a range of factors that have a much greater influence on the success of treatment.
These include:
Healthy teeth and gums provide the best foundation for orthodontic treatment.
If there are any underlying issues—such as gum disease or untreated decay—we’ll explain how these can be managed before treatment begins.
This isn’t about delaying your journey.
It’s about giving you the best possible long-term result.
Is there an upper age limit?
In most cases, no.
Unlike children, adults have fully developed jaws, which means treatment planning is slightly different.
However, teeth can still be moved safely and predictably when the surrounding tissues are healthy.
Many adults begin treatment in their:
And sometimes beyond.
Every smile is different.
That’s why the only reliable way to know whether braces are suitable is through a professional assessment.
One of the things we hear surprisingly often is:
“I feel a bit silly asking about braces at my age.”
Please don’t.
There isn’t a “correct” age to want to feel more confident about your smile.
Some people prioritise orthodontic treatment in their twenties.
Others focus on careers, raising families or other commitments first.
Many finally decide to do something for themselves later in life.
Every journey is different.
Our role isn’t to ask why you waited.
It’s to help you understand what’s possible now.
There are many reasons.
For some, it’s about confidence.
For others, it’s about oral health.
Common reasons include:
Often, it’s not one big reason.
It’s years of small moments that gradually add up.
This is often the question behind the question.
Sometimes when people ask:
“Am I too old?”
What they really mean is:
“Will I feel self-conscious wearing braces as an adult?”
Modern orthodontic treatment offers several discreet options, including clear aligners and less noticeable fixed braces.
During your consultation, we’ll explain which options may be suitable for your smile and lifestyle.
The right choice depends on much more than appearance alone, but many adults are pleasantly surprised by how discreet treatment can be.
Are braces different for adults?
The principles of moving teeth are the same, but adult treatment is often planned with different priorities.
Adults may be more concerned about:
Treatment plans are tailored to each individual, taking these factors into account.
Being suitable for braces doesn’t automatically mean they’re the best choice.
Sometimes another treatment may better achieve your goals.
For example:
That’s why we believe consultations should focus on understanding your goals before recommending any treatment.
Sometimes the most ethical advice is not to have braces.
Questions we often hear
It’s common for teeth to move over time, particularly if retainers are no longer worn.
Adult orthodontic treatment can often address these changes.
Many adults with crowns, bridges or fillings can still have orthodontic treatment.
We’ll assess your individual situation and explain any considerations.
Not necessarily.
Treatment time depends much more on the complexity of tooth movement than on your age.
Is it worth doing later in life?
Only you can answer that.
Many patients tell us they wish they’d started sooner.
Others are simply pleased they decided to start when the time felt right.
“I’m too old for braces.”
Age alone rarely determines whether orthodontic treatment is possible.
“Braces are only for teenagers.”
More adults than ever are choosing orthodontic treatment.
Myth
“I’ll look unprofessional.”
Many adults find modern orthodontic treatment is far more discreet than they expected.

✨ How can you keep your teeth white?
In this short video, Dr Richard Ford shares some simple ways to help keep your smile looking its best:
• Attend regular hygiene appointments to help remove surface staining.
• Brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste.
• Be mindful of foods and drinks that can cause staining, such as black coffee, red wine and turmeric.
• If you’d like a brighter smile, professional teeth whitening is a safe and effective option.
The reality is that teeth naturally pick up stains over time. The good news is that a few simple habits can make a real difference.
If you’re thinking about whitening your teeth, or you’re not sure which option is right for you, we’re always happy to help you understand your choices with no pressure.

Will composite bonding damage my teeth?
It’s a common concern, especially for patients who want to improve their smile while protecting their natural teeth.
The good news is that composite bonding is often one of the most conservative cosmetic dental treatments available. In many cases, little or no preparation of the tooth is required, meaning your natural tooth structure can be preserved.
Composite bonding can be used to improve the appearance of:
✔ Chipped teeth
✔ Small gaps between teeth
✔ Uneven tooth shapes
✔ Worn edges
✔ Minor imperfections
Because the treatment is minimally invasive, many patients choose composite bonding when they want to enhance their smile without significant changes to their natural teeth.
Every smile is unique, so we’ll always discuss your options and explain exactly what’s involved before any treatment begins.

Reading comments like this reminds us why we do what we do.
Helping people feel comfortable and cared for is just as important as providing great dentistry.
Thank you for your kind words.
You could be grinding your teeth every night… without even knowing it. 😴
Many people assume they’d know if they were clenching or grinding their teeth.
In reality, most don’t.
As Richard explains, while we’re asleep our brains continue processing the events and stresses of the day. For some people, that stress is released through clenching or grinding their teeth - but because the part of the brain that would normally recognise it is effectively switched off during sleep, we often have no idea it’s happening.
Over time, tooth grinding can contribute to:
• Worn or chipped teeth
• Jaw pain or stiffness
• Morning headaches
• Sensitive teeth
• Disrupted sleep
If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, it’s worth mentioning them at your next appointment. We can look for the signs of tooth grinding and discuss ways to help protect your teeth before more damage occurs.
Have you ever been told you grind your teeth, or has someone heard you doing it while you sleep?
