Eating with braces

Eating with braces

What can you eat during orthodontic treatment?

Short answer: You can continue to enjoy a varied, healthy diet during orthodontic treatment. There may be a few temporary adjustments, particularly in the first few days after your braces are fitted or adjusted, and some foods are best avoided to help protect your appliance.

One of the first questions many adults ask is:

“Will I still be able to eat normally?”

The answer is yes.

You’ll still enjoy meals with family, eat out with friends and celebrate special occasions.

You may simply need to make a few small adjustments along the way.

The first few days

When your braces are first fitted, or after they’re adjusted, it’s normal for your teeth to feel a little tender.

During this time, many people find softer foods more comfortable.

Some ideas include:

  • Soup
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Yoghurt
  • Pasta
  • Rice dishes
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Fish
  • Smoothies

This stage is usually temporary, and most people return to their usual eating habits within a few days.

Foods to enjoy

Once you’ve settled into treatment, you’ll still be able to enjoy a wide variety of foods.

A balanced diet supports your general health and helps keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment.

The key is to eat sensibly and take care of your appliance.

Foods to be careful with

If you’re wearing fixed braces, certain foods can increase the risk of damaging brackets or wires.

These may include:

  • Hard sweets
  • Ice cubes
  • Whole nuts
  • Hard crusty bread
  • Popcorn kernels
  • Very chewy sweets
  • Toffee
  • Chewing gum

This doesn’t mean you can never enjoy your favourite foods again.

It simply means thinking about how you eat them and avoiding anything that could damage your appliance.

What about fruit and vegetables?

Fresh fruit and vegetables remain an important part of a healthy diet.

If they’re particularly hard, cutting them into smaller pieces can make them easier and more comfortable to eat.

Small changes like this can help you continue enjoying healthy foods throughout treatment.

The Evolve perspective

We’d never want patients to feel that braces mean giving up the foods they enjoy.

Instead, we focus on helping you understand how to protect your appliance while still living your life.

Orthodontic treatment should fit around your life—not take it over.

Eating with clear aligners

If you’re wearing clear aligners, you’ll remove them before eating or drinking anything other than water.

This means there are no specific food restrictions while you’re eating.

However, it’s important to:

  • Brush your teeth before putting your aligners back in whenever possible.
  • Keep your aligners clean.
  • Avoid leaving them wrapped in a napkin—they’re easily thrown away by mistake!

Eating out

Many adults worry that braces will make restaurants awkward.

In reality, most people continue eating out exactly as they always have.

You may simply choose foods that are easier to manage if your teeth are feeling tender after an adjustment.

Before long, eating out becomes completely routine again.

What if something feels uncomfortable?

If a particular food feels uncomfortable, don’t force it.

Choose something softer for a day or two and allow your teeth time to settle.

If you’re experiencing significant discomfort or think something may have become damaged, get in touch with us.

We’re always happy to help.

Myth vs reality

Myth

You can only eat soft foods while wearing braces.

Reality

Soft foods are often helpful during the first few days, but most patients soon return to a varied diet with a few sensible precautions.

Myth

Braces mean you can never eat your favourite foods again.

Reality

Most foods can still be enjoyed with a little care and a few adjustments.

Myth

Clear aligners mean you can eat with them in.

Reality

Clear aligners should be removed before eating or drinking anything other than water.

Questions patients often ask

Can I eat normally after getting braces?

Yes. You may prefer softer foods for the first few days, but most people quickly return to their usual diet.

Can I drink coffee?

Yes. If you’re wearing clear aligners, remove them before drinking anything other than water to help avoid staining and damage.

Can I eat apples?

Yes, but with fixed braces it’s usually more comfortable and safer to cut them into small pieces rather than biting directly into them.

What if I break a bracket while eating?

✨ How can you keep your teeth white?

In this short video, Dr Richard Ford shares some simple ways to help keep your smile looking its best:

• Attend regular hygiene appointments to help remove surface staining.
• Brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste.
• Be mindful of foods and drinks that can cause staining, such as black coffee, red wine and turmeric.
• If you’d like a brighter smile, professional teeth whitening is a safe and effective option.

The reality is that teeth naturally pick up stains over time. The good news is that a few simple habits can make a real difference.

If you’re thinking about whitening your teeth, or you’re not sure which option is right for you, we’re always happy to help you understand your choices with no pressure.

Have you got a question about keeping your teeth white? Leave it in the comments and we’ll do our best to answer it.

Will composite bonding damage my teeth?

It’s a common concern, especially for patients who want to improve their smile while protecting their natural teeth.

The good news is that composite bonding is often one of the most conservative cosmetic dental treatments available. In many cases, little or no preparation of the tooth is required, meaning your natural tooth structure can be preserved.

Composite bonding can be used to improve the appearance of:

✔ Chipped teeth
✔ Small gaps between teeth
✔ Uneven tooth shapes
✔ Worn edges
✔ Minor imperfections

Because the treatment is minimally invasive, many patients choose composite bonding when they want to enhance their smile without significant changes to their natural teeth.

Every smile is unique, so we’ll always discuss your options and explain exactly what’s involved before any treatment begins.

Reading comments like this reminds us why we do what we do.

Helping people feel comfortable and cared for is just as important as providing great dentistry.

Thank you for your kind words.
You could be grinding your teeth every night… without even knowing it. 😴

Many people assume they’d know if they were clenching or grinding their teeth.

In reality, most don’t.

As Richard explains, while we’re asleep our brains continue processing the events and stresses of the day. For some people, that stress is released through clenching or grinding their teeth - but because the part of the brain that would normally recognise it is effectively switched off during sleep, we often have no idea it’s happening.

Over time, tooth grinding can contribute to:
• Worn or chipped teeth
• Jaw pain or stiffness
• Morning headaches
• Sensitive teeth
• Disrupted sleep

If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, it’s worth mentioning them at your next appointment. We can look for the signs of tooth grinding and discuss ways to help protect your teeth before more damage occurs.

Have you ever been told you grind your teeth, or has someone heard you doing it while you sleep?
