Short answer: Adult orthodontic treatment can be an excellent option for many people, but it’s not always the right answer. The best treatment depends on your smile, your oral health, your goals and what you’d like to achieve.
If you’re wondering whether braces are right for you, you’re already asking the right question.
Not:
“Which braces should I have?”
But:
“Should I have braces at all?”
That’s a much more important decision.
This guide is designed to help you think through your options, understand where orthodontics can help and recognise when another treatment may be a better fit.
The first question isn’t “Can I have braces?”
It’s “What would I like to change?”
People often start researching braces because they’re unhappy with their smile.
But when we ask what they’d actually like to change, the answers are often very different.
Some people say:
Each of these concerns may have a different solution.
That’s why understanding your goals always comes before discussing treatment.
Signs orthodontic treatment might be right for you
Adult braces may be worth exploring if you have:
Teeth that overlap can sometimes be more difficult to clean effectively and may affect the appearance of your smile.
Gaps between teeth
Some people are concerned about spacing because of appearance, while others find it affects how their teeth function.
Teeth that have moved over time
It’s common for teeth to gradually shift during adulthood, even if you’ve had braces before.
Bite concerns
If your teeth don’t meet comfortably when you bite together, orthodontic treatment may help improve how they fit.
Difficulty cleaning your teeth
Straighter teeth can often be easier to brush and floss effectively.
A lack of confidence
Sometimes the biggest impact isn’t physical.
It’s emotional.
If you find yourself covering your mouth when you laugh, avoiding photographs or feeling self-conscious when meeting new people, orthodontic treatment may be something worth exploring.
When braces might not be the best option
One of the things we’re most proud of at Evolve is that we don’t believe braces are the answer to every problem.
Sometimes another treatment may better achieve your goals.
For example:
If you’re happy with the position of your teeth but would like a brighter smile, whitening may achieve the improvement you’re looking for.
Composite bonding
For minor chips, small gaps or slight shape differences, composite bonding may be an alternative to orthodontic treatment.
Restorative dentistry
Sometimes improving worn or damaged teeth is a more appropriate starting point.
No treatment at all
Occasionally, after discussing your goals, you may decide you’re happy exactly as you are.
That’s a perfectly good outcome too.
The Evolve perspective
One of the biggest misconceptions about dentistry is that every consultation ends with a treatment recommendation.
It shouldn’t.
Sometimes the best advice we can give is:
“I don’t think braces are the right option for you.”
That might sound surprising.
But healthcare should never be about recommending treatment simply because it’s available.
It should be about recommending what’s genuinely in your best interests.
Sometimes that’s orthodontics.
Sometimes it isn’t.
Questions to ask yourself before deciding
Before booking a consultation, take a few minutes to think about these questions.
Try to be as specific as possible.
Is it one tooth?
Several teeth?
Your bite?
Your confidence?
Why now?
Has something changed recently?
Perhaps you’ve noticed your teeth moving.
Maybe there’s a significant event coming up.
Or perhaps you’ve simply reached a stage in life where you’re ready to invest in yourself.
There isn’t a right answer.
Understanding your motivation helps you make a decision you’ll feel comfortable with
What matters most to me?
Everyone has different priorities.
For example:
Knowing what’s most important to you helps shape the conversation.
Am I looking for perfection?
Perfection isn’t usually the goal.
Improvement is.
The most successful patients often have realistic expectations and are looking for a smile they feel confident sharing – not an impossible ideal.
What happens if I decide to explore treatment?
The next step is simply a consultation.
That doesn’t commit you to anything.
It gives you the opportunity to:
Many patients tell us they feel much more relaxed once they’ve had an opportunity to talk things through.
What if I’m still unsure?
That’s completely normal.
Orthodontic treatment is a significant decision.
There’s no prize for deciding quickly.
Take your time.
Read reliable information.
Ask questions.
Talk things through with family or friends if that helps.
A good practice will support you whether you decide to go ahead, wait a while or choose not to have treatment at all.
Myth vs reality
If my teeth aren’t perfectly straight, I probably need braces.
Reality
Many people have healthy, functional smiles without perfectly straight teeth. Orthodontic treatment is a personal choice based on your goals and clinical needs.
Myth
Everyone who asks about braces ends up having treatment.
Reality
A consultation is about understanding your options, not committing to treatment.
Myth
Braces are the answer to every cosmetic concern.
Reality
Depending on your goals, treatments such as whitening, composite bonding or restorative dentistry may be more appropriate.
Questions patients often ask
The only way to know for certain is through a professional assessment. We’ll evaluate your smile, your bite and your goals before discussing whether orthodontic treatment is appropriate.
What if I’m only bothered by one tooth?
Many adults seek treatment because of one particular area of concern. During your consultation, we’ll explain whether orthodontics is the best way to achieve the improvement you’re looking for.
Can I have braces if I’ve had them before?
Yes. Teeth can naturally move over time, and many adults choose orthodontic treatment for a second time to correct those changes.
What if I decide not to go ahead?
That’s absolutely fine.
Our role is to help you make an informed decision, whatever that decision may be.

✨ How can you keep your teeth white?
In this short video, Dr Richard Ford shares some simple ways to help keep your smile looking its best:
• Attend regular hygiene appointments to help remove surface staining.
• Brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste.
• Be mindful of foods and drinks that can cause staining, such as black coffee, red wine and turmeric.
• If you’d like a brighter smile, professional teeth whitening is a safe and effective option.
The reality is that teeth naturally pick up stains over time. The good news is that a few simple habits can make a real difference.
If you’re thinking about whitening your teeth, or you’re not sure which option is right for you, we’re always happy to help you understand your choices with no pressure.

Will composite bonding damage my teeth?
It’s a common concern, especially for patients who want to improve their smile while protecting their natural teeth.
The good news is that composite bonding is often one of the most conservative cosmetic dental treatments available. In many cases, little or no preparation of the tooth is required, meaning your natural tooth structure can be preserved.
Composite bonding can be used to improve the appearance of:
✔ Chipped teeth
✔ Small gaps between teeth
✔ Uneven tooth shapes
✔ Worn edges
✔ Minor imperfections
Because the treatment is minimally invasive, many patients choose composite bonding when they want to enhance their smile without significant changes to their natural teeth.
Every smile is unique, so we’ll always discuss your options and explain exactly what’s involved before any treatment begins.

Reading comments like this reminds us why we do what we do.
Helping people feel comfortable and cared for is just as important as providing great dentistry.
Thank you for your kind words.
You could be grinding your teeth every night… without even knowing it. 😴
Many people assume they’d know if they were clenching or grinding their teeth.
In reality, most don’t.
As Richard explains, while we’re asleep our brains continue processing the events and stresses of the day. For some people, that stress is released through clenching or grinding their teeth - but because the part of the brain that would normally recognise it is effectively switched off during sleep, we often have no idea it’s happening.
Over time, tooth grinding can contribute to:
• Worn or chipped teeth
• Jaw pain or stiffness
• Morning headaches
• Sensitive teeth
• Disrupted sleep
If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, it’s worth mentioning them at your next appointment. We can look for the signs of tooth grinding and discuss ways to help protect your teeth before more damage occurs.
Have you ever been told you grind your teeth, or has someone heard you doing it while you sleep?
